Lunar Xtracts to open cannabis lab at Reed & Barton

TAUNTON — Lunar Xtracts consultant Brian Giacobbi said company officials hope to begin their first phase of manufacturing marijuana products in August at the former Reed & Barton factory on West Britannia Street.

“We are super excited and optimistic about working with the city of Taunton, which has been incredible to work with,” he said.

Lunar Xtracts still needs a special permit from the City Council and has to have an architect review completed by the state Cannabis Control Commission in May, he said.

“From there, we will then begin renovations,” Giacobbi said.

Giacobbi said Lunar Xtracts recently received a provisional license from the Cannabis Control Commission to manufacture various cannabis products for retail shop owners to purchase and sell.

Lunar Xtracts would not have a retail shop on the property, he said.

“It’s not zoned for retail,” he said. “Nothing is open to the public in that building where it’s zoned. There will be strictly manufacturing and cultivation at the site with no public access.”

Giacobbi said Lunar Xtracts plans to renovate a 4,260-square-foot section on the first floor of the sprawling four-story building built in 1900.

Lunar Xtracts’ cannabis products

Giacobbi said Lunar Xtracts hopes to begin cannabis extraction in August if the Cannabis Control Commission approves the firm’s renovation site plan and the City Council grants a special permit.

“We will have a lab where we perform a cannabis extraction process (from cannabis plants) to produce various cannabis oils,” he said.

Giacobbi said the extraction process would be Lunar Xtracts’ first phase of manufacturing cannabis products for retail shops and marijuana factories to purchase from the company.

Lunar Xtracts’ state license application indicates they plan to manufacture topicals, lotions, salves, oils, sprays, waxes, shatter, vape oil, tinctures and pre-rolled cannabis joints.

Giacobbi said these products would be sold to marijuana factories and cannabis retail shops during Lunar Xtracts’ second phase of the manufacturing process, that is expected to begin after the factory’s renovation is expected to be completed in 2025.

Giacobbi said Lunar Xtracts would specialize in producing vape cartridges and a disposable vape pen that can be sold at a retail market for customers to purchase.

Lunar Xtracts’ application states they also plan to manufacture cannabis chocolate bars in addition to various gummies and tablets that contain pomegranate, watermelon, raspberry, blueberry, mango and tangerine.

Lunar Xtracts plans to hire diverse workforce

Giacobbi said Lunar Xtracts plans to “fully fulfill” the Cannabis Control Commission’s requirement to hire employees of color, military veterans, people who have disabilities and LGBTQ+ employees.

“We fully intend to impact the community’s charities positively,” he said. “We don’t do that just monetarily, but by helping to do things in the community.”

The manufacturing facility would be next to Freshly Baked, a recreational cannabis delivery company co-owned by Phillip Smith, who serves on the Cannabis Control Commission’s Social Equity Program management board.

Philip Smith and Jenny Roseman own Freshly Baked Company.

“We are proud to be associated with what they have accomplished on the social equity side,” he said.

According to state cannabis officials, the Social Equity Program offers free technical training for participants to succeed in the cannabis industry.
