Headed into the weekend at the North America East Semifinals, it seemed obvious where the competition would be for the podium spots. As one of the most competitive regions in the world, NA East featured four of the top ten teams in the world coming out of the Quarterfinals.

One big thing: Despite what looked like an extremely strong top end of the field, the weekend so far has proved that the road to the podium will be more difficult than some of those top teams imagined.

While East Nashville PRVN came in ready to dominate, they found themselves tied point-wise at the end of Day 1 with Move Fast Lift Heavy 247, the 15th-seeded team.

While Move Fast Lift Heavy 247 was considered one of the lower-seeded teams, it’s also important to note that they were still one of the teams predicted to shake things up given their workout performance during Quarterfinals.

  • During Quarterfinals, the team finished in the top five in three of the five workouts and had another top ten finish in workout two. It was only the final workout that dragged their overall score down with a 75th-place finish in workout four.
  • The same thought process could be applied to AB CrossFit – Mayhem, who finished 3 of five Quarterfinal workouts in the top ten, including a first-place finish on workout four.
  • However, two finishes in the thirties on workouts 1 and 2 would move them to the middle of the qualifying pack from Quarterfinals.
  • In Workout 2, AB CrossFit – Mayhem would go on to beat East Nashville PRVN and Move Fast Lift Heavy 247 to take first overall in the workout.
  • This would leave Day 1 with a top three featuring only one team seeded in the top five.

As Day 2 came to a close, those top four seeded teams (East Nashville PRVN, Mayhem Independence, CrossFit OBA, and CrossFit Krypton) started to balance themselves out, with CrossFit Krypton and Mayhem Independence pulling themselves into the top five after workouts 3 and 4.

However, the end of Day 2 still leaves us with the potential for a podium featuring two wildcard teams.

  • While PRVN sits firmly in first with 388 points, CrossFit Move Fast Lift Heavy 247 trails by just 12 points, with AB CrossFit – Mayhem coming in third just 15 points behind CrossFit Move Fast Lift Heavy.
  • Beyond the top three, CrossFit Krypton sits well within striking distance of a podium spot, just 15 points behind AB CrossFit – Mayhem, but only 18 points ahead of CrossFit Mayhem Independence, who is separated by just three points from CrossFit CLT The Grit Haus.

The big picture: As we begin to shift from online to in-person competition at this point in the season, perhaps the biggest change we will see is how teams respond to more synchronized and team-focused workouts. With elements such as the worm and the pressure of communicating together on a crowded competition floor, it sometimes takes an event like this to prove who is truly the fittest team.
