How is gargling with salt water effective? | Life-style News

As soon as the chill in the air takes over, many resort to home remedies that start with taking herbs and spices. However, one effective remedy that works for many is salt water gargling. Have you ever wondered how it works?

According to Dr Shrey Srivastav, MD (Internal Medicine), Sharda Hospital, Noida, salt water gargles are a simple, safe, and affordable home remedy. “They’re most often used for viral respiratory infections like sore throats or sinus infections. Gargling with salt water has been shown to ease pain and inflammation from a sore throat,” said Dr Srivastav.

Dr Tribhuvan Gulati, lead consultant, diabetes, obesity and internal medicine, CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi too agreed and mentioned that gargling with salt water is a time-tested and effective remedy for various oral and throat ailments. “The saline solution helps create an environment that is inhospitable to bacteria and viruses, making it an excellent practice for soothing sore throats and reducing inflammation. Gargles with salt water are known to remove excess fluid from inflammatory tissues, relieving pain and hastening the healing process,” said Dr Gulati.

Gargling with salt water regularly might be a proactive way to maintain good dental hygiene and general health.

Dr Srivastav explained that salt has been scientifically proven to help draw water out of oral tissues which creates a salt barrier that locks out water and harmful pathogens like viruses and bacteria from getting back inside and reduces the chance of infections in the mouth and throat, and relieve inflammation in certain cases.

Moreover, the osmotic effect of salt can help to break down mucus and reduce congestion in the throat. “Salt’s gentle antiseptic qualities also aid in the removal of dangerous germs, halting the progression of illnesses. This straightforward yet effective treatment is a go-to choice for easing the symptoms of colds, the flu, and other respiratory illnesses since it’s simple to make and apply,” Dr Gulati added.
