Seven years prison sentence handed for trafficking cannabis

A 22-year-old from the Limassol region was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Larnaca Criminal Court for trafficking a significant quantity of cannabis.

The young defendant confessed to engaging in the illegal trade to repay a debt incurred from purchasing narcotics.

The accused was found guilty following his admission to charges of possessing nearly 10 kilograms of cannabis with the intention of supplying it to other individuals.

According to case details, on October 7, 2023, members of the Drug Enforcement Service rushed to an area in Zygi after receiving information about an impending large-scale marijuana smuggling operation.

Officers from the Drug Enforcement Service located the convict’s vehicle heading from the Kalavasos exit towards Zygi.

At some point, the 22-year-old stopped near a viaduct and proceeded towards a bamboo plantation in the area. There, he was observed collecting two black garbage bags, which he placed in his car before departing.

Subsequently, a police patrol began pursuing him. In an attempt to evade arrest, the 22-year-old drove his vehicle into an olive field, immobilizing it. He then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Police officers searched his car and discovered the ten kilograms of cannabis inside the black bags.

The next day, the accused appeared at the police station with his lawyer, who handcuffed him. During his statement, he revealed his intention to transport the cannabis to another location, intending to settle a debt of €1,500 incurred from purchasing narcotics.
