Local diabetic having difficulty filling prescription

(WKBN) – Many people are turning to medications like Ozempic, Trulicity and similar drugs for weight loss, they are also being prescribed to those with Type 2 diabetes. With a national shortage of these medications, some of those patients are now wondering where to go.

Royce Gernert, a type 2 diabetic, said he was unable to get his prescription filled at the pharmacy.

For diabetics, these medications help lower their A1C, which is important for those managing Type 2 diabetes. However, one side effect people have latched onto is weight loss.

“Every one of these commercials on there, if you read the fine print, it says, ‘This is not for weight loss, but you may lose a few pounds,’” Gernert said.

WKBN called several pharmacies, which reported experiencing a similar shortage of Trulicity and similar drugs.

One pharmacy reported that the manufacturer was allocating its limited supply, while another pharmacy reported when supplies were in stock, it would send a notification to those patients needing it, but it’s on a first-come, first-served basis.

During times when there are shortages, doctors recommend buying lower dosages.

“Let’s say somebody is on 4.5 milligrams of Trulicity in stock, but we have 3 milligrams and the 1.5 in stock. you just have to take those, and they can take it at the same time,” said Benjamin Brocker, of Mercy Health.
