Maine college adding online programs for cannabis certifications

The cannabis industry is rapidly growing across much of the country, including Maine.In fact, according to the Maine Office of Cannabis Policy, adult-use cannabis generated more than $246 million in sales revenue in 2025. The legal cannabis industry now supports more than 425,000 full-time jobs across the U.S. and is expected to grow to $50 billion in revenue by 2027.Given the growth of the industry and demand for people to work in it, the University of New England Online (UNE Online) College of Professional Studies is launching new, 100-percent online certificate programs for people interested in careers in the cannabis industry.Employers in the cannabis industry are increasingly looking for employees with formal training and credentials. The new online courses and certifications from UNE include cannabis cultivation, retail, sales, compliance, and medical applications. “The industry is kind of settling out now in terms of demand and supply. It’s still prevalent here and there is still a lot of great earning potential and great economic growth potential so we’re excited to be in at the ground floor helping the Maine workforce,” said Ed Cervone, Associate Dean of the College of Professional Studies for UNE Online.The programs are offered in partnership with Green Flower, a cannabis employer and leader in cannabis education.The 16-week, focused programs include:Cannabis Cultivation SpecialistCannabis Product Development SpecialistCannabis Retail and Sales SpecialistCannabis Compliance SpecialistMedical Cannabis SpecialistUNE Online is also offering a Cannabis Associate Certificate that provides training and education on every major sector of the cannabis industry and takes only eight weeks to complete.The next start date for all programs is March 10.
