RRH doctors warn that respiratory viruses are on the rise

It’s that time of year – children and adults are getting sick.

After years of COVID being the dominant virus, more people are being infected with other common illnesses.

Doctors with Rochester Regional Health say respiratory viruses are on the rise, especially among children who are back in school and no longer wearing masks.

Doctors say RSV, enterovirus and rhinovirus are spreading fast.

It’s also causing more serious illness in many pediatric patients, stressing an already stressed hospital system.

Dr. Colleen Markevicz says there are some signs to look out for when your child is sick to tell if they need hospital care, including making sure your child is eating and staying hydrated and, if they aren’t, they may be going to the bathroom, which is a sign of dehydration.

Lastly, check how they are breathing. If they have labored breathing, it’s time to call a doctor.

“It can get worse before it gets better,” Dr. Markevicz said. “You seem like you’re hanging in there and staying hydrated and then, if the parents are concerned, that is a reason to come back. Just because they’ve seen a doctor for the illness already, it changes hour to hour, day to day and parents should be encouraged to ask their primary care doctors if they have questions.

Health officials say this respiratory season has started much sooner than normal. Doctors say the best way to protect yourself is to get vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19.
