Been on your bike recently? The latest figures from the Department for Transport, published last week, show that 50 per cent more of us are cycling regularly. In the past four months alone, cycling levels have been higher than they were pre-pandemic and 11 per cent up on where they were in the 2020 lockdowns, when we were all dusting down our bikes for permitted daily exercise. Rising fuel prices are undoubtedly playing a part, but buying a bike or a pair of trainers is also considerably cheaper than a subscription to a gym. Both running and cycling are money-savers and bring enormous health benefits, but which outperforms the other?
