Laredo mayor proclaims Healthy Heart Awareness Day at Doctors Hospital

City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino proclaimed Friday as Healthy Heart Awareness Day in a ceremony at Doctors Hospital.

Cardiovascular disease remains the No. 1 cause of death globally, meaning more people die annually from cardiovascular disease than any from any other cause, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

“The journey in addressing our community’s medically underserved starts with awareness, education and prevention programs,” Trevino said. “As mayor and as a practicing physician, I will continue to raise this critical issue in order to drive more investment in our community’s public health.”

Most cardiovascular disease can be prevented by addressing behavioral risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet habits and obesity, physical inactivity, and harmful use of alcohol, the proclamation states.

Trevino is a practicing physician of over 36 years and understands the need for health education and prevention in Laredo’s medically underserved community.

People with cardiovascular disease or those who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease due to the presence of one or more risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and/or hyperlipidemia need early detection and management.

“I thank Doctors Hospital for the Healthy Heart Awareness Event and proclaim this to be Healthy Heart Awareness Month,” Trevino said.
