Everybody wants their hair to be so shiny and thick that it looks right out of a shampoo commercial on television. But in a world where nutrient deficiencies, health problems and hormonal imbalances are common, what is the remedy for thinning strands and receding hairlines?

While traditional herbal remedies and cutting-edge technologies can help boost hair growth, there are a number of supplements that promise an array of benefits, from preventing hair loss to strengthening follicles.

According to Dr Seema Oberoi Lall, Consultant- Dermatology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, hair supplements, often packed with vitamins and minerals, address the underlying issues of hair loss, providing the body with the building blocks needed for healthy hair.

Here are the four key supplements to tackle hair loss:

Biotin

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions. “It helps in many metabolic processes and enzymatic reactions, including the maintenance of healthy skin, nails and hair. The connection between biotin and hair growth stems from its role in keratin production — a protein that forms the foundation of hair, skin and nails,” said Dr Lall.

She recommended an intake of 30 to 70 micrograms daily. “Good sources of biotin are nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and egg yolks,” Dr Lall explained.

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that help improve heart health, cognitive function and vitality of your hair. “The three primary types — ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) have anti-inflammatory properties, which helps promote a healthy scalp. With their ability to reduce inflammation, they may create an environment conducive to hair growth,” Dr Lall noted.

You can also get omega-3 fatty acids from your diet by eating foods like canola oil, flax seeds, walnuts, chia seeds as well as fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines.

Iron

While iron is commonly associated with its role in carrying oxygen through the bloodstream, Dr Lall said that it is a key component in the production of haemoglobin — a protein that oxygenates the blood, ensuring that every cell, including those responsible for hair growth, receive the oxygen it needs.

“When the body lacks sufficient iron, a condition known as iron-deficiency anaemia can ensure, which hampers the normal functioning of hair follicles, leading to a disruption in the hair growth cycle,” she explained.

Incorporating iron-rich foods into one’s diet can benefit those experiencing hair thinning or loss. “Red meat, poultry, fish, beans, lentils and spinach are excellent sources of dietary iron,” Dr Lall shared.

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 is the form of vitamin D synthesised in the skin in response to sunlight. “It plays a role in regulating hair growth cycles and promoting hair follicle health. It’s anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties help reduce hair loss caused by inflammation and autoimmune conditions,” said Dr Lall.

While the best source is sunlight, Dr Lall suggested eating foods that are naturally high in vitamin D3, such as fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel), egg yolks and liver. “If you don’t get enough vitamin D3 from sun exposure or food, consult a doctor about taking a supplement. The recommended daily intake of vitamin D3 is 600 IU (international units) for adults and 800 IU for people over 70 years.”

It’s essential to approach hair loss supplements as a part of a holistic approach to wellness, which includes maintaining a healthy lifestyle, eating a balanced diet, sleeping well and managing stress.
