Cincinnati woman goes TikTok viral after ER misdiagnoses appendicitis

A Greater Cincinnati woman has taken social media by storm after an emergency room misdiagnosis.

Amanda Buschelman, 42, posted a video on TikTok Jan. 31 in which she claimed doctors dismissed her appendicitis for an ovarian cyst.

According to the “Today” show, Buschelman said she visited her family doctor last month because she was experiencing pain on the right side of her abdomen. After a routine pelvic exam, the unidentified physician told Buschelman she likely had appendicitis and would need to go to the ER.

After two ER visits, doctors told Buschelman she had a cyst on her ovary, even though she had a hysterectomy to treat endometriosis a decade ago, “Today” reported. She was then prescribed an antibiotic for diverticulitis, an inflamed bulge on the digestive tract.

Buschelman consulted with her OB-GYN and elected to have surgery to remove the growth.

During surgery, doctors discovered that Buschelman had appendicitis the whole time, confirming her primary care physician’s original diagnosis. She then took to social media to vent about her experience. To her surprise, over 14,000 people commented on her viral video, sharing similar stories.

When this story was published Feb. 20, Buschelman’s original video had received over 4 million views. Others with the hashtag #OvaryGate had also gained hundreds of thousands of views.

Buschelman has continued posting about her journey on TikTok, hoping to inspire other women to do the same. She has also consulted with an attorney and is pursuing legal action against the hospital, according to a video posted Feb. 17.

“What it boils down to for me is if this would’ve happened 20 years ago or even 10 years ago, I can’t say that I wouldn’t have just said, ‘Nobody’s listening. I guess I’m just going to die.’ … Because I would’ve believed with my whole soul that a doctor is out to help me,” she said in the video.
