What A New Doctor Who Confidential-Style Show Means For The Franchise’s Future?

Airing immediately after new episodes of Doctor Who following the show’s revival from 2005 to 2011, Doctor Who Confidential would take audiences on a trip behind-the-scenes of the production of the latest adventure. The documentary series also informed younger viewers of some of the franchise’s history, explaining elements of the classic series to new audiences when relevant to the events of the current season. Despite becoming a beloved series in its own right and even being utilized to reveal Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith’s casting in 2009, Doctor Who Confidential was canceled in 2011, with the BBC citing its cancelation as being part of cost-cutting measures.

While potential Doctor Who spin-offs have been rumored following Disney’s involvement in the franchise, many may be pleasantly surprised to hear that a successor series to Doctor Who Confidential is in the works. With the franchise finding a new international streaming home on Disney+, the new documentary series could be a perfect way to introduce audiences to the wider universe of Doctor Who. While a potential new documentary series may only be a one-time production commissioned to celebrate the show’s 60th-anniversary milestone, Davies’ ambitions to see the brand grow could see the documentary series continue into Ncuti Gatwa’s era of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who Confidential offered a new way to learn more about the franchise. With Disney+ regularly releasing behind-the-scenes specials including the Disney Gallery Star Wars docuseries and Marvel Studios Assembled specials, the service could offer similar programming with Doctor Who Confidential. As such, with Tennant confirming a new Doctor Who behind-the-scenes series is in development and the franchise set to arrive on Disney+, the streaming service could potentially be the ideal place to release the successor to the beloved behind-the-scenes docuseries.
