A medical resident who was accused of sexually assaulting a patient during private “exams” at Aventura Hospital will be on probation — and will not be able to practice medicine involving patients without a judge’s permission.

On Friday morning, Dr. Keun Lee, 33, entered into a plea deal with prosecutors on two misdemeanor battery charges. As a result of the agreement, he received a withhold of adjudication, meaning no criminal conviction will appear on his record, and was ordered to complete two years of probation.

The doctor was originally facing sexual-battery charges, but those charges were reduced to misdemeanors.

The plea deal was the result of new information that emerged during a deposition taken before the trial was set to commence, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office told the Miami Herald on Friday afternoon. The information “required a reassessment of the viability of the case moving forward.” The state attorney’s office did not elaborate on what the information entailed.

The deal was approved by the victim, according to the SAO.

Lee must also stay away from the victim, who was 23 when she was admitted to Aventura Hospital with a severe leg injury on July 8, 2019.

By July 17 of that year, the victim had been placed under the care of a psychiatrist, who was supervising Lee. Later that day, Lee returned to the woman’s room to “examine” her, using his bare hand to sexually assault her, the victim told investigators.

The following day, the woman received another visit from Lee, who peppered her with questions about her sex life. Lee then told the woman she needed another “physical exam,” and she was again sexually attacked with his hands, according to a police warrant.

The alleged examinations weren’t recorded in the woman’s medical file, according to investigators. Detectives corroborated the woman’s claims by reviewing surveillance video showing Lee entering the woman’s room alone.

Lee’s supervisor told police Lee had “no reason to have over 40 minute long private visits with a patient” or be conducting any physical examinations on her, according to court filings. At the time of incidents, Lee was a medical resident — or doctor in training — at the hospital.

Lee was arrested after surrendering to authorities in December 2021. He had flown to his native South Korea in April 2021 and returned that July.
