Election Day 2022 forecast: Chilly but clear in Central NY
Syracuse, N.Y. – The weather in Central New York on Election Day will be just about normal for early November, although it will feel like colder after record-breaking warmth over the weekend.
The temperature will be about 39 degrees when polls open at 6 a.m., and will rise to about 50 degrees by mid-afternoon, the National Weather Service predicts. Those are just about normal temperatures for Nov. 8 in Syracuse.
Winds of about 10 mph will make it feel like 46. (Yes, we’re finally talking about wind chill this season.) Skies will be clear all day, the weather service says, with no rain or snow to hamper anyone getting to the polls.
It was 80 degrees on Sunday, only the third time in 120 years Syracuse hit that mark in November.
Voters will be making big decisions in a number of tight races on Tuesday, from governor to U.S. Congress. Among the top races Central New Yorkers will see on their ballots:
* Governor. Incumbent Democrat Kathy Hochul, who has been in office since August 2021, faces Republican challenger Lee Zeldin. Polls show Hochul’s lead has shrunk in the waning days of the campaign.
* Congress. Republican Brandon Williams and Democrat Francis Conole are neck-and-neck in the race for 22nd Congressional District. Incumbent Republican John Katko is retiring.
* Onondaga County sheriff. Toby Shelley, a Democrat and retired sheriff’s deputy, faces off against Republican Esteban Gonzalez, a veteran of the sheriff’s office. The current sheriff, Gene Conway, is retiring.
* State Senate. John Mannion, a Democrat and former high school teacher from Geddes, is seeking a second term in the redrawn 50th District. The Republican challenger is Rebecca Shiroff, once a spokesperson for Metro Mattress who now works for Onondaga County.
* State Senate. Incumbent Rachel May, D-Syracuse, is being challenged by Julie Abbott, a Skaneateles Republican and Onondaga County legislator. They are running in the redrawn 48th Senate District.
