FDA warns of counterfeit Ozempic being sold in salons, on social media
CINCINNATI (CNN/CNN Newsource/WKRC) – The FDA has warned that counterfeit Ozempic is being sold in salons and on social media.
The agency has found thousands of units of counterfeit versions of the Type-2 diabetes drug. According to the organization, five people have gotten sick in connection to the imitation products, but noted that so far none of the cases have been serious.
Investigators said it wasn’t clear what ingredients were in the fake versions. They also warned the needles that come with the counterfeit injectable drug may not be sterile.
The FDA said the best way to avoid fakes was to only buy Ozempic through state-licensed pharmacies with a valid prescription.
Ozempic has become widely popular due to its weight loss properties, which has led to an increase in demand, and people selling knock-off versions at salons and through social media.
