Godfread: Insurance fraud up in North Dakota, especially in health care | The Mighty 790 KFGO

North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread

BISMARCK, N.D. (PRAIRIE PUBLIC/KFGO) – North Dakota’s Insurance Commissioner says his office has seen an uptick in insurance fraud cases.

Jon Godfread says whenever the economy dips a bit, fraud spikes upward.

“We’ve got a significant caseload for our investigators right now. A lot is in the healthcare space – that seems to be a hotbed for it,” he said.

Godfread says in addition to three fraud investigators, he also has one investigator focused on insurance agents. He says he has a number of memorandums of understanding with local states’ attorneys to assist his department in prosecuting the cases.

Godfread says insurance fraud crimes affect all North Dakotans.

“You pay higher premiums because the more insurance fraud there is, the higher premiums that we have to pay as the insurance-buying public,” he said.
