Is everyone in your family getting sick? Florida doctors warn of virus rise
PERRY, WPBF 25 NEWS. AS WE APPROACH THE HOLIDAY TRAVEL SEASON, DOCTORS ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA ARE TREATING MORE PATIENTS WITH THE FLU, WALKING PNEUMONIA, AND STREP THROAT. TAYLOR HERNANDEZ IS LIVE TO EXPLAIN WHAT’S BEHIND THIS UPTICK IN RESPIRATORY AND BACTERIAL SICKNESSES. TAYLOR. WELL, TIFFANY. RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES LIKE THESE. THEY SPIKE EVERY FALL WHEN THOSE KIDS HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL. AND SO IT’S NOT REALLY A SURPRISE, BUT WHAT DOCTORS TELL ME IS A CONCERN IS SINCE THE PANDEMIC, KIDS ARE GETTING SICKER, FASTER. DOCTOR HUMBERTO LAUREANO SAID EVERY PATIENT HE SAW TODAY TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE FLU THIS WHOLE WEEK. EVERYONE’S FLU POSITIVE. SO I THINK IT’S NOW STARTING AGAIN. SO REMEMBER FOR US, FLU IS LATE MID-OCTOBER ALL THE WAY TO DECEMBER. RSV STARTS NOW AS WELL, BUT IT’S NOT THE KIDS ARE GETTING SICK. THAT’S NOTHING NEW. OF COURSE, IT’S HOW FAST THEY’RE GETTING SICK AND HOW SEVERE THE SYMPTOMS TURN. SO NOW IT IS A LITTLE BIT MORE CONTAGIOUS. IT SPREADS A LOT EASIER. KIDS ARE GETTING SICKER BECAUSE ALL THESE KIDS THAT WERE HOME FOR 2 OR 3 YEARS WERE NEVER EXPOSED. SO NOW THEY’RE BEING EXPOSED AND A LOT OF KIDS ARE GETTING SICK REALLY, REALLY FAST. DOCTOR LAUREANO SAID IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID VIRUS SEASON AND KEEPING KIDS GERM FREE IS A TALL TASK, SO HIS BEST ADVICE? DEFINITELY TRY TO INCREASE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM. YOU KNOW, FRUIT, VITAMIN C IMMUNE BOOSTERS FOR KIDS. THERE’S A LOT OF THINGS OUT THERE. THAT’S THE KEY. THAT CERTAINLY IS THE KEY. HE ALSO ENCOURAGES THOSE WHO ARE ABLE TO TO GET VACCINATED AGAINST RSV, COVID AND THE FLU. THERE ARE VACCINES FOR EACH OF THEM AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET. NOW, HE SAID WHILE IT MAY NOT STOP YOU FROM GETTING SICK ALTOGETHER, IT WILL CERTAINLY MAKE IT LESS SEVERE. WE’RE LIVE TONIGH
