Juhi Parmar shares ‘age-old solution’ to reduce side effects of eating mangoes, find out if it actually works

Tis’ the season of our beloved mangoes! This summer fruit is widely cherished for its juicy, sweet, and fragrant flesh, and is enjoyed by people of all ages and cultures. However, in some traditional medicine practices, it is believed that consuming mangoes can lead to an increase in body heat, impacting the digestive system and gut health. As such, should you completely let go of your favourite fruit?

Not really! Juhi Parmar recently took to Instagram to share a simple method to say goodbye to the side effects of mangoes. “It’s that season of the year again when our homes are flooded with mangoes. But if you feel you have to stay away due to the heat, pimples, etc that they may cause, then don’t worry! Here’s a quick age-old solution that lets you enjoy mangoes and yet not worry about any side effects,” she captioned the post.

She said that practising this technique won’t increase body heat, can help in weight loss, gets rid of phytic acid, and is free from pesticides and insecticides. But, what method is it? It’s simple – “Just soak mangoes in water for half an hour before eating.”

Talking about the same, nutritionist Payal Rangar, a health and wellness coach, explained that mangoes have phytic acid, which is found in the milky sap that drops from the mangoes’ stems. “Phytic acid has benefits but also has side effects. It allows the body to absorb iron, calcium, zinc, and other minerals that are necessary for the body to prevent mineral deficiencies. Soaking it can help the body get rid of the extra phytic acid that makes it overheat. Mangoes also contain phytochemicals that have a lower concentration after soaking and work naturally to burn fat,” she said.

Rangar added that not soaking mangoes may raise your body temperature and damage the digestive system, gut health, and skin, causing issues like pimples. “So, soaking it in water for half an hour before eating is a fantastic idea because it reduces the natural heat and stickiness on the surface and makes it safe for consumption,” she said.

Agreeing, functional nutritionist Mugdha Pradhan, CEO and Founder, iThrive said that as with most other plant foods, mangoes benefit from presoaking. “Doing so helps remove a lot of the harmful plant defence chemicals and antinutrients such as phytic acid and lectins. Mangoes have a high phytic acid content. Soaking also helps in the removal of any pesticides and other chemicals, although it’s best to consume organic mangoes to avoid pesticides completely.”

She highlighted that Ayurveda also mentions the benefits of soaking mangoes. “According to Ayurvedic texts, mangoes contain some amount of ‘heat’ and can have a heating effect on the body. Soaking helps reduce this negative effect,” the nutritionist added.

Concluding, Pradhan said that half an hour is the bare minimum soaking time. “We should aim to soak mangoes ideally for 2-3 hours for best results.”
