Milwaukee doctor’s clinic provided needed care for neighborhood kids

Thank you for the article, “Groups step up calls for Children’s Wisconsin to keep open doctor’s office on Milwaukee’s north side,” on Nov. 24.

Children’s should reverse its decision and assure the continuing survival, and if needed, the enhancement of Children’s Next Door Pediatrics clinic, where it is most needed, in Metcalfe Park.

The reality is that if the clinic closes, many children in Metcalfe Park and the surrounding area will not receive the timely professional care they deserve. The offer of care at other clinics miles away is hollow. Many parents in the area do not have cars. Public transportation is terribly inadequate. It may take hours or longer to get a ride for a sick or injured child to a clinic miles away.

The proffered reason for the decision is “space and size constraints … do not allow us to consistently deliver the services our patients require.” Yet, the clinic building remains available, and the doctors and staff are being retained. The claim of inadequate space and size implies the need in Metcalfe Park for more, not less, medical service. The solution then is to expand the facility, not to close it!

In any case, the clinic certainly must be retained given the admitted need.
