Nebraska doctors warn of heat illness as high temps persist

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – It can take only minutes to experience symptoms of heat illnesses if you are not properly hydrated.

“You need to be cognizant of it doesn’t take very long,” said Dr. Paul Bernhardson of Complete Children’s Health. “You can get hot very quickly, and it can get very hot very quickly.”

Lincoln has had three straight triple-digit days, and another one is expected on Thursday. Eastern Nebraska is under an excessive heat warning.

That heat can have a range of health effects, from sunburn to heat exhaustion.

Dr. Michael Schooff, a family physician with CHI Health, said symptoms of more serious heat illnesses include weakness, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, cramps and an unsteady gait.

People over 65 and children under 4 are the most susceptible to heat illnesses, Bernhardson said.

They do not sweat as much, and therefore are not able to regulate their body temperature as well.

He also said heat illnesses can be prevented, mainly by drinking fluids.
