New bungee fitness studio takes flight in Jasper

Jennifer Fromme opened Wing It Bungee Fitness in The Vine at 1280 Vine Street in Jasper.

You have to trust the bungees and listen to instructor, Jennifer Fromme. If you do, you’ll have a lot of fun in an hour long class at Jasper’s newest fitness studio, Wing It Bungee Fitness, as you fly through the air, spin around and forget you’re there to get a great workout.

“When you trust that bungee, then you become invincible. You feel like you can fly,” Jennifer said. “It’s super fun, and I think that’s the big appeal. You can laugh and you forget about life for a while.”

The studio located in The Vine at 1280 Vine Street in Jasper opened to the public this week after a friends and family session last Saturday. It features 12 bungee stations that can accommodate a wide range of participants regardless of their fitness level and age in an open studio with padded floors.

The unique workouts led by Jennifer uses bungee cords to support participants while they perform various exercises. It combines cardio, strength training and fun in a way that’s gentle on joints while providing an intense workout.

“It is a lot easier on your joints,” Jennifer explains. “When I teach the intro class, I’ll have somebody do a couple of jumping jacks, like a normal jumping jack. And then I will tell them to scoot forward and you do a jumping jack with that tension and that bungee holds your weight, holds your body weight.”

The workout also engages muscles that even experienced fitness enthusiasts might not regularly use. Jennifer’s daughters, who were trained dancers through college, discovered this firsthand.

“They were sore.” she said, adding that it is a great workout for the core, calves and back.

Classes involve step-by-step instruction allowing participants to learn movements through repetition to build muscle memory, with modifications available for different fitness levels.

Jennifer loves the moment when clients suddenly understand how to balance the support the bungees provide with the movements they attempt.

“That light bulb going off, (the client) going ‘I just did it’ is so great and so rewarding,” she said.

Jennifer’s approach to bungee fitness emphasizes both physical benefits and community building. Once the anxiety wears off or you realize everyone else is as nervous as you, friendships can form around the fun, she said.

Plus, the low impact aspect of the workout means anyone of any fitness level or age can participate. There are plenty of modifications to decrease or increase the intensity of the workouts. And, you don’t have to worry about falling because the bungees will catch you.

It’s that aspect of bungee fitness that helps classes feature moments of unintentional humor as participants learn the techniques.

“I’ve got bloopers. When you’re first learning something, people are going at different rates and different speeds. And so there’s a little crashing,” she laughed. “Or somebody missteps. And then they’re flying, you know, then they’re just hanging there. It’s so fun and freeing, and people are just laughing.”

The studio represents a new chapter in Jennifer’s fitness journey. She has taught Zumba for 13 years, picked up Pound (think percussive exercise fun with drumsticks) this past year, and even holds a Guinness World Record for teaching Zumba to more than 2,000 kids on a football field in Warrick County.

That experience plus her background coaching dance at Tecumseh for ten years all come into play as she leads the classes.

You can learn more at the Wing It Bungee Fitness website or on Facebook here. Classes start with a special buy one get one free for $25 and there are group rates. Jennifer, who holds a master’s degree in data science and works full-time as a data scientist, plans on providing classes in morning and evenings and on the weekends.
