New York Expands Continuous Health Coverage for Young Children

New York has extended continuous Medicaid coverage for children up to age six, aiming to eliminate service gaps, according to the Times Union. The program, backed by $6 billion in federal funding, marks the longest health care “off-ramp” for young children nationwide.

Federal approval for the initiative came as part of a broader Medicaid waiver program allowing states to explore innovative health strategies.

The expansion ensures uninterrupted medical services during critical early years, addressing issues like disenrollment and re-enrollment complications.

Lawmakers cite the benefits for families juggling frequent doctor visits, vaccines, and checkups. Nearly half of New York’s children are covered by Medicaid or Child Health Plus, and the policy aims to enhance health outcomes and reduce public assistance costs.
