NY Cannabis Insider’s week in legal weed for Oct. 22, 2022

Happy weekend, everyone!

Have you bought your tickets for NY Cannabis Insider’s Nov. 4 live event in Tarrytown? It’s coming up in less than two weeks – and it should be a good one – so grab your tickets before they sell out!

When we weren’t getting things ready for the conference, here’s the NY weed news we reported last week:

Editor/Publisher Brad Racino uncovered that multistate operator Curaleaf had to recall products in NY twice since December. In his story, Brad details these two previously unreported recalls, which he found out about through a Freedom of Information Law request to the Office of Cannabis Management.

On Thursday, I ran a story about ethical considerations for attorneys representing weed industry clients in NY. Attorneys are operating somewhat in the dark when it comes to ethical boundaries: they may represent competing companies, or be applying themselves for a cannabis business license while repping clients that are going after the same prize.

Three NY cannabis lawyers I interviewed said that despite the fact OCM hasn’t yet outlined all the rules and regulations, there are key ethical precepts that any cannabis attorney should follow.

I also wrote a profile this week on Freeport testing lab Lexachrom Analytical Laboratory as part of NY Cannabis Insider’s effort to profile each of the state’s cannabis labs as they prepare for the adult-use market. Lexachrom CEO Alex Woodmass told me he’s planning for growth as New York’s adult-use market opens, but he also intends to remain a lean operation that mostly focuses on the medical market.

We had a story this week about a partnership formed between McNeil & Co. – which provides risk management and underwriting services – and the Cannabis Association of New York. The two entities have created a safety group that provides discounted workers’ compensation coverage and a group dividend to the association’s members.

In the runup to our live event, we ran a couple of stories previewing what we’ll have there for attendees. One piece looks at the topics our panels will cover (they include sessions on federally rescheduling marijuana, a conversation between industry veterans and plenty more).

Another article about our upcoming Tarrytown event provides a list of panelists. We have a lot of very smart and connected people coming, so take a look at who’s going to be there.

Continuing our People to Know in NY Cannabis series, last week we featured Timothy McDowell, the COO of Bristol Extracts, a state licensed adult-use conditional processing company and a licensed hemp cultivator.

Lastly, we posted attorney Jeffrey Hoffman’s latest Ask Me Anything segment on Friday. During the talk, Hoffman answered and opined on questions about shipping weed, cracking down on illicit operators and more.

Have a nice weekend, everyone, we’ll have plenty more for you next week!
