The Studio in Wilton to open 24-hour gym, June 1

WILTON – At The Studio, a locally-owned gym in downtown Wilton, the approach to health and wellness is both passionate and compassionate. The Studio offers programs with three different trainers, and a new expansion will open up a 24-hour gym for independent workouts.

The Studio is owned by Cyra Merrill, who opened the gym in 2017 in a small space just over 400 square feet. The Studio managed to stay open through COVID by moving group classes outside to the parking lot and offering online classes and sessions. Additional spaces have been opened over the years, and the newest expansion will have the gym at a total of 2,000 square feet.

The Studio has a wide range of programs and classes such as restorative yoga, massage therapy, and a nail studio, in addition to bodybuilding training for competitions, group classes, and one-on-one training.

“There’s no such thing as settling,” Cyra said. “You can create anything you want, you just have to work for it.”

Cyra’s approach with clients is to help them identify goals and a roadmap to reach those goals, and hold them accountable to themselves for their own successes. She finds that sometimes the barriers exist more in the mind than in the body; building confidence and promoting positive beliefs about oneself leads to visible and physical results for her clients.

The gym is not exclusively for women, but it does tend to be more female oriented, and the clientele is mostly women. In Cyra’s studio, the walls are filled with motivational posters and the windows are lined with plants. The spaces are comfortable and more private than other gyms, which has appeal for many clients. The gym is not set up for children – adults 18 years and older, only.

Cyra’s team is hand-picked to help meet the needs of clients. For some, Cyra may not be the best fit; she readily refers clients to her other trainers if that is the best option.

Movement with Mary is a program designed for those 55 years old and older. This program has been running for a year under the care of Mary Kalel, a former teacher.

“We focus on what we can do, and keep it going,” Mary explained. She helps clients identify their strengths and weaknesses, find modifications to exercises, and improve health and well-being in a sustainable manner. “There isn’t anything we can’t do. It just may take a little longer.”

Sarah Patterson offers a lifestyle program called Carpe Diem Fitness. This program includes weight training, nutrition, and bodybuilding. Sarah focuses on helping clients find their own strength. Sarah started working with Cyra several years ago and then started working as a personal trainer and nutrition coach to help others reach their goals.

“It’s such a lonely journey and yet we’re all doing the same thing,” Cyra said. Fitness and health is a highly individual journey, and while the trainers are there to support and guide the journey, the work comes down to the person doing it. “We can’t want it more than you.”

The Studio’s newest expansion will have a secure gym open 24/7 for members only. Membership will be $35 monthly. Those interested in seeing the gym and meeting with Cyra, Sarah, and Mary, can visit The Studio on Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first 35 members to sign up will receive a gift bag filled with items from local, women-owned businesses in Franklin County.

The Studio is located in the Old Bass Building at 284 Main Street in Wilton. To contact The Studio, reach out on Facebook.
