US Marine Dies During Training Exercise At Inland Empire Base

TWENTYNINE PALMS, CA — A U.S. Marine stationed on the East Coast died during a training exercise last week at an Inland Empire base, military officials confirmed Tuesday.

Lance Cpl. Jackson J. Forringer, who served as an infantry rifleman with the 2nd Marine Regiment, died April 20 during integrated training exercise 3-23 at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, according to Sgt. Zabolotniy, 2d Marine Division.

The purpose of the live-fire training known as ITX 3-23 is to create a challenging, realistic, environment that produces combat-ready forces.

No other injuries were reported and no further details about the incident were provided.

The fatality is currently under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Forringer, who was born in Anderson, S.C., had just turned 20 on April 9. He enlisted three months after turning 18 and was stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., according to Zabolotniy.

During his brief military career, Forringer received the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on June 2, 2022.

Forringer was a 2021 graduate of Chesnee High School in South Carolina. Serving in the U.S. Marine Corps was a lifelong dream, according to his obituary.

“He never met a stranger and was one of the humblest, kind-spirited individuals you could meet,” the obituary reads. “He loved to give back and help others.”

Forringer is survived by his parents, Todd A. Forringer and Andrea L. Forringer of Chesnee, S.C.; brothers Ryan Forringer (Lauren) of Lyman, S.C. and Adam Forringer (Lexi) of Moore, S.C.; bonus brother, Kameron Hall of Chesnee; as well as nieces, grandparents, and bonus grandparents.
