In this edition of “What They’re Watching,” we were thrilled to hear from Gordon Ito, insurance commissioner at the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, at our recent 2023 Hawaii State of Reform Health Policy Conference. He discussed his focus on community-grounded, “whole spectrum” efforts to lower the cost of healthcare.

Ito also emphasized the work that state leaders are doing to prepare for upcoming Medicaid redeterminations.
“We’re working with [the Hawaii State Department of Health] and making sure the people who are currently on Medicaid and who will lose coverage have the opportunity to purchase health insurance on the market.”
With states allowed to begin redetermining Medicaid eligibility on April 1st, Hawaii intends to start disenrolling ineligible members from the program in May or June.
