What Type Of Cannabis Consumer Are You? There Are 9 Archetypes, Here Are 4

Gone are the days when cannabis was shrouded in secrecy and whispered about behind closed doors. Currently, marijuana users comprise a significant and influential segment of the market, marking a remarkable shift in societal perception and acceptance of this plant.

“With 42% of U.S. adults having used cannabis and likely to do so again, and another 15% expressing interest in trying cannabis in the future, acceptance and receptiveness continues to grow, creating massive opportunities in both new and emerging markets,” said Gary Allen, New Frontier Data CEO at the time “Cannabis Consumers in America 2023: Part 1” was released last May.

New Frontier Data’s upcoming report, “Cannabis Consumers in America 2023 Part 2: Exploring the Archetypes,” now revealed the most frequently-consuming cannabis user types.

What Is Your Archetype, According To The Report

The report provides a comprehensive overview of the nine cannabis consumer archetypes based on the 2023 consumer survey data. Among these archetypes are:

  1. Savvy Connoisseurs: These consumers use cannabis frequently for both medical and recreational purposes, sourcing it from legal dispensaries as well as informal channels. They are the highest spenders and most likely to be a source of cannabis for others.
  2. Contemporary Lifestylers: Primarily recreational users, these consumers prefer smokable cannabis products and primarily acquire cannabis from regulated sources such as dispensaries. They are moderate-to-high spenders.
  3. Medical Lifestylers: Similar to Contemporary Lifestylers, these consumers frequently use smokable cannabis but for medical reasons. They rely on legal dispensaries and delivery services and rank as the second-highest spenders.
  4. Legacy Lifestylers: These frequent consumers predominantly smoke cannabis, but are illicit consumers due to legal restrictions. They source cannabis from friends and illicit dealers, spending similarly to their legal counterparts. Notably, this archetype has decreased in size compared to the previous year’s survey, reflecting evolving cannabis policies and shifting consumer preferences, per the report.
