Wrinkle-free Friday: New procedure helps combat the ‘Ozempic body’ sag

Doctors have a new procedure for people who want to tighten up loose skin.

METAIRIE, La. — There’s a new saying called “Ozempic body.”

It’s become popular after rapid weight loss from injections for diabetes, and weight loss, leaves sagging skin.

Doctors have a procedure for those patients, and others, who want to tighten up loose skin.

The before and after pictures tell the story.

For as long as she can remember, Ciara Pemberton did not like the way her back looked in a bra.

“That was a nightmare,” Ciara Pemberton, 36 of Harvey, said with a laugh. “That fatty kind of part, and it just kind of hangs over. That is, that’s a killer, and especially living down here where it gets hot, you want to wear your tank tops.”

So, she turned to Metairie plastic surgeon, Dr. Cynthia Mizgala, for a solution, that time in the gym was not helping.

“The results we’re getting most recently, are just phenomenal, to the fact where if I saw it on Snapchat, I’d say that’s fake. That’s photoshopped, but I know it’s not because I did it,” said plastic surgeon Dr. Cynthia Mizgala, of A Woman Plastic Surgeon in Metairie.

Dr. Mizgala says she is getting those good results with an updated version of Renuvion. After traditional liposuction to reduce pockets of fat, a helium plasma, and radio frequency device under the skin, can tighten crepey, sagging, or loose skin. It goes in the fibroceptal network, where the collagen tissue and elastic fibers are, then heating them and causing the area to contract – like shrink-wrapping plastic.

“And if we can do some of the improvement with this technology, which promises up to 60 percent shrinkage, it’s amazing the things we can achieve,” Dr. Mizgala added.

One patient she brought into the O.R. lost 70 pounds with weight loss surgery. Dr. Mizgala combined Renuvion, not only with liposuction, but lifts where some skin is removed. That can keep the patient from having more cutting, and scars. Now the popularity of weight loss injections is bringing in more patients with loose skin.

“And you know they do all this effort to get healthy and to get to their ideal body weight, and they’re like, ‘What am I going to do with all this skin,’” she said her patients ask her.

One of the newer techniques doctors are doing with Renuvion, is they are just tightening skin in people who are already at their ideal body weight and don’t need to have fat removed.

Ciara just had Renuvion three months ago on her 36th birthday. She says it was not painful, and knows it takes six to nine months for the full results.

“I was just unhappy with the way I looked honestly, for a long time. My back is so much smaller and tighter. I feel like the inches just came off, and I’m very, very happy with the results,” said Pemberton.

If a small area is being treated, the procedure can be done with only local numbing, but with a larger area, it’s done under sedation.
